What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a debilitating condition which causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the extremities, especially the hands and feet, due to compromised nerve function.

There are different types of neuropathy that exist and these classifications are determined by the cause of neuropathy. Other common types of neuropathy include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome is a type of neuropathy which is caused by the impingement of the median nerve which runs through the carpal tunnel in the wrist.
  • Diabetic neuropathy (which is due to nerve damage as a result of diabetes)
  • Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy (which is caused by damaged nerves due to chemotherapy treatments).

Although several types of neuropathy have been classified, any case of neuropathy is characterized by nerve pain, numbness, and tingling due to damaged or impinged nervous tissue.

Cause of Symptoms for Neuropathy

The symptoms of neuropathy occur because the damaged or compressed nerve tissue block the electric signals which run between the brain and the rest of the body to control function. This blockage results in a pain signal or no signal reaching the brain instead. As a result, patients experience pain, debilitating limiting activity, mobility and the other symptoms associated with neuropathy.

Treating Neuropathy with Chiropractic Care

Specifically designed to target neuromuscular conditions, chiropractic care can effectively treat several acute cases of neuropathy and can help to manage the symptoms of chronic neuropathy. Through spinal and extremity manipulation, laser therapy, various other modalities, hot and cold therapy, nutritional counseling, and corrective exercise, chiropractic care reduces inflammation, re-aligns the spinal cord, and effectively removes blockages of the nervous system. As a result, patients experience reduced pain, restored feeling, accelerated healing, and less frequent and severe symptoms of neuropathy.
