Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a centuries-old practice in Chinese medicine that has been further developed and improved in recent years. The special tools used in the procedure are now known popularly as “Adhesion Breakers.”

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) uses several hand-held instruments designed to be used in conjunction with other treatments to increase the effectiveness of the soft tissue work being performed. These tools and therapies are used to correct the adhesions and scar tissue that form due to injury and inflammation from accidents, surgeries, overuse, and lack of exercise. The procedure works by increasing tissue elasticity and fibroblastic activity to return the muscles and surrounding tissues to as close to pre-injury status as possible. This is accomplished by initiating a controlled inflammatory process which will allow the tissue to begin the healing process, breaking down scar tissue and adhesions in the tissue and redirecting collagen formation in the proper orientation for correct movement of muscles and tissues.
Adhesion Breaker Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue (IASTM) Therapy replaces the practitioner’s hands, allowing the practitioner more ease in detecting fibrotic changes in the soft tissues through the vibrations carried through the tools. This therapy encourages rapid recovery and rehabilitation from injury and pain by helping to remove scar tissue and adhesions while decreasing stress on the practitioner’s body.
